The Medieval chess pieces are based on a Germanic set from the 14th Century. They retain a similar shape and style to the Lewis set despite this difference in origin. One particularly interesting fact about this set is that you can see the early development of the Rook/Warder piece into the more common castle as seen in more modern sets.

With old origins like the Lewis Pieces, the medieval set suits very traditional colour schemes such as black and ivory and brown and red.
